The Air Force is looking for a suite of options to augment, supplement, backup, complement, and or improve current space communication capabilities. Solutions may be ground-based or space-borne and involve some combination of hardware devices, software, data products, algorithms, or services.
As of 2016, satellite communication accounted for 49% of the operational satellite market with 35% of coming from the commercial sector. Additionally, communications satellites accounted for 22% of the overall satellite revenue for the year 20161. From a military perspective, space communication ensures effective transmission of information to and from the warfighter.
The Air Force is looking for a suite of options to augment, supplement, backup, complement, and or improve current space communication capabilities. Solutions may be ground-based or space-borne and involve some combination of hardware devices, software, data products, algorithms, or services.
These solutions need to demonstrate commercial viability to ensure an efficient evolution through development to respond to rapidly evolving technologies.

Hedron (formerly Analytical Space) is building a network of data relay satellites in low earth orbit to enable low latency, high throughput downlink from government and commercial remote sensing satellites.
ATLAS Space Operations provides global communication and data services that leverage cloud-based intelligence to lower cost and deliver simple, secure, and scalable value-added solutions. FREEDOM™ is the solution for processing and analyzing vast amounts of data from space to ground by utilizing a ground antenna network powered by ATLAS’ revolutionary cloud-based software.
Omnispace’s pole-to-pole communications system enables seamless transitions between urban, rural and maritime domains – overcoming the need for multiple devices on multiple networks. We fuse the reach of MEO satellites with the power of cellular to harness our unique 2Ghz S-band spectrum, bringing interoperable “one network” connectivity to users and IoT devices anywhere on the globe.
Opterus gives small spacecraft the performance of big spacecraft through rapid innovations in deployable and unfolding structures. Our products include hinges, booms, solar array structures, phases arrays, antennas, and parabolic solid surface reflectors.
Skyloom is developing a fully optical network based in small GEO relay satellites. It drastically increases the bandwidth for LEO constellations to get more data back to ground in real-time and cost effectively. Skyloom’s mission is to unlock the true economic potential of Low Earth Orbit by providing unprecedented spaceborne communication services to data collection and internet satellite constellations.
SQT offers quantum technology that provide unhackable communications links and is the only company with a compact space-qualified entangled photon source.
Xenesis represents to spectrum, what broadband represented to dial-up 30 years ago. Xenesis provides a simple, novel, tested and patented design for Space based Optical downlink and global Optical communications.
